Book NowMeander through the rolling Mendip Hills to THE PIG-near Bath for a day of digging deep into our veg beds in one of our largest Kitchen Gardens.
As one of the earliest PIGs to open its doors in 2014, our widespan Kitchen Garden is home to our very own buzzing beehives, some of our largest fruit cages across THE PIGs, a wildflower orchard, and a newly planted nuttery that will provide future ingredients for dishes on our 25 mile menu.
You’ll arrive to a warm PIG welcome with a hot drink to help you settle in and get to know your fellow garden enthusiasts, before heading over to our walled Kitchen Garden, tucked away behind the Victorian greenhouse restaurant. THE PIG’s Group Head Kitchen Gardener, Ollie Hutson, and THE PIG-near Bath’s Head Kitchen Gardener, Zack Jones, will guide you through a private Kitchen Garden tour where you’ll get a thorough peek into our veg beds, explore what’s growing and ready to harvest, and get an insight into how our teams in the garden and the kitchen work hand-in-hand.
Ollie has been heading up THE PIG Kitchen Gardens since day one and together with Zack, he will share insider stories of how the team came to plan our second ever Kitchen Garden here in the countryside. You’ll discover the native plants you’ll only be able to find in our patch in Somerset and, of course, you’re always welcome to ask your own questions and get some growing tips and tricks for your own outdoor space at home! We’ll take our time and dig into our veg beds in much greater depth and detail than our daily Kitchen Garden tours, where you’ll get to taste some of the fresh pickings growing in our patches along the way.
After an afternoon of exploring the garden, you’ll head to our outdoor Wood Oven restaurant overlooking the Deer Park for a homegrown Applemint non-alcoholic cocktail and included lunch of wood oven-baked flatbreads, loaded with locally foraged toppings, and plentiful plates of fresh, hearty salads using homegrown goodies from the Kitchen Garden.
While you tuck in, you’ll get to enjoy a light-hearted and engaging talk with Tom Radford – local wild food expert, forager and good friend of THE PIG. Tom will share insights into the local pickings available right on our doorstep here in the Mendip Hills that our PIG chefs use in our seasonal dishes (including our flatbreads!) with tips and tricks on what you can find in the local area, how to spot hidden gems, and what you can use your foraged finds in. So, sit back and relax in the sunshine, soaking up the very best our Somerset patch has to offer!
More about our friends from the National Garden Scheme
Here at THE PIG’s, we are all about giving back to our local community and the patch we call home, so when our friends from The National Garden Scheme wanted to partner up to offer bespoke Kitchen Garden gatherings, we just had to get on board.
The National Garden Scheme is all about giving the local community unique access to over 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, to raise money for charities and organisations. In addition, they open breath taking gardens to support everyone’s physical and mental health – spending some time outdoors in the midst of our produce always makes us feel better that’s for sure!
Through admission fees, plus the many teas and cakes they sell, they raise impressive amounts of money for nursing and health charities. So far, they have managed to donate over £67million and in 2022, they made an annual donation of £3.11million. Some of their core charities and organisation include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.
